Gainey Ranch's Fairways Close in Stages This Month, and the Resort's Fall Calendar Covers Every Week

Starting tomorrow, Monday, October 5, 2026, the Dunes and Lakes nines at Gainey Ranch Golf Club close for overseeding. The Arroyo nine follows on October 12. Arroyo is the last to reopen, on November 10, according to the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 overseed schedule. That gives the course the Ranch was built around five weeks of limited or no play. Those five weeks fall completely inside Harvest at Grand Hyatt. The resort's fall season started September 19 and runs to November 26, and the hotel says it's for "both locals and resort guests."

So from now until Thanksgiving, Gainey Ranch runs on two calendars at once. On the club's, the green space closes in a set order. On the resort's, something new opens most weeks. Laying them side by side shows you what's available on any given Saturday.

The Closure Comes in Three Steps

The course doesn't shut all at once. Gainey Ranch Golf Club has three nine-hole courses designed by Benz and Poellot, and they come out of play in sequence. The club's own October calendar lists "Lakes & Dunes Closed For Overseed" alongside a separate entry, "Driving Range Closed for Overseed," both starting Monday, October 5. The club's November calendar shows Lakes and Dunes still closed on Monday, November 2, and Arroyo closed on Monday, November 9. Both match the AGA reopening dates.

Oct 12 Closed Closed Closed Closed

For this first week, Arroyo is the only nine in play. From October 12 through November 2, all three are closed. The club's public calendar has no reopening date for the range, so check with the club before planning practice sessions in early November. The AGA page has no publication date either. Confirm the dates with the club before you build a standing tee time around them.

The club stays open for some things during the closure. Its dining calendar lists a Wine Dinner on Thursday, October 8, at 6:00 p.m., right in the middle of the Dunes and Lakes closure. The public listings don't say what regular dining hours will be over these weeks.

Why It Takes Five Weeks

From a patio along the Dunes or Lakes nines, the next month will look like this. Low-desert courses run on Bermudagrass in summer. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension says Bermuda goes dormant and loses its green color in winter. Perennial ryegrass seeded over it stays green from October through May.

The process has a fixed order. UA's guidance describes changing mowing height and irrigation first, then cutting the turf low and seeding into that prepared surface. One Scottsdale course describes its own version as four steps followed by a watering period:

  • Scalp. The Bermuda is cut very short, so the fairways go pale and patchy.
  • Seed. Ryegrass goes down on the short surface.
  • Topdress and fertilize. A thin layer goes over the seed.
  • Water heavily. That course says this lasts 10 to 14 days while the rye germinates.

That description is Talking Stick's, not Gainey Ranch's. Gainey Ranch hasn't published a step-by-step account of its turf work, so treat this as the typical regional process, not the club's exact plan. The calendar lines up with university guidance, though. UA puts Phoenix-area winter-grass seeding at roughly October 10 to November 10, and says October seeding needs extra water, including several waterings a day to establish the grass. Gainey's own closure, October 5 to November 10, fits almost exactly in that window.

The heavy watering is why the closure lasts as long as it does. A peer-reviewed review of Southwest turf found that overseeding takes more water, fertilizer, and labor than leaving Bermuda dormant. If you walk past the course in mid-October and see fairways that look wet at odd hours, that's the germination stage in progress. The green that shows up by early November is the rye that will carry the course through May.

What the Resort Runs While the Fairways Are Out of Play

Over the same five weeks, the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort, 0.37 miles from the club at 7600 E Gainey Club Dr, has its busiest stretch of seasonal programming. Under its earlier name, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch, the property finished a $115 million renovation and its rebrand in November 2024.

There's one spot where the two calendars literally meet. The resort's pool firepit looks out over the golf course lake and the McDowell Mountains, and Harvest season adds specialty s'mores kits and seasonal treats there. In October, that's a view of the course while it changes over.

The resort's dated events fall across the closure like this:

  1. Now through the season. Oktoberfest Happy Hour, with live music, happy hour specials, and Oktoberfest-inspired dishes. There's also live music every Thursday through Saturday, plus Fall Activity Programming listed from $10.
  2. October. Thanksgiving buffet reservations open this month. The resort describes the buffet as traditional dishes, Southwestern flavors, and live music.
  3. Saturday, October 31. The adults-only Masquerade Halloween Party at Grand Vista Lounge, with live entertainment, themed cocktails, a costume contest, and mask decorating on site for anyone who arrives without one. Tickets are listed from $49.
  4. Friday, November 6. Karaoke at Tiki Taka, listed as complimentary and kid-friendly. That's the same week the Dunes and Lakes nines come back.
  5. Thursday, November 26. Harvest ends on Thanksgiving Day, the date of the buffet.

The resort also lists Harvest Movie Nights, family crafts, and a Harvest Feast, and says more events will be added as the season goes on. None of these has a published date yet, so the resort's experiences page is the place to watch.

Golf at the resort doesn't get around the closure. The Hyatt says Gainey Ranch Golf Club is open only to private members and resort guests. Members and guests both play the same nines on the same overseed schedule. Tee times go through the Golf Concierge at 480-444-1234, ext. 5700.

After the Course Reopens

When Arroyo reopens on November 10, the club's calendar is back to normal and the resort's moves on to the holidays. The Grand Hyatt's winter list includes holiday light displays, a Hanukkah menorah lighting, Christmas carolers, and seasonal cocktails. Brunch with Santa reservations are expected "this fall," and New Year's Eve 2026 reservations are coming "later this fall." The resort is also promoting a Winter Cabana with dedicated service, hot cocoa, and blankets, and its booking page lists cabanas from $350. By then the rye seeded in October should be the green you see from the cabana.

The dates worth putting in your calendar are October 12, when Arroyo closes and all three nines are out; October 31, the masquerade; November 3, when Dunes and Lakes reopen; November 10, when Arroyo reopens; and November 26, the last day of Harvest. For anything not dated yet, including the range reopening and the Santa brunch, watch the club calendar and the resort's experiences page.

At MP Real Estate Group, we track the Gainey Ranch calendar the way owners here live it, from overseed dates to resort seasons.
